Helping you
desex & microchip your animals

We offer Snip 'n' Chip and other discounted desexing vouchers across Aotearoa New Zealand at different times of the year.

Desexing and microchipping are key ways to improve animal welfare in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Desexing reduces the number of unwanted litters, improves welfare for these animals, and positively impacts the environment. Microchipping is a great way to help owners be reunited with their lost pets.

This website includes helpful resources for you to view and download, including some in different languages.

SNIP ‘N’ CHIP COMES TO GISBORNE!

We are excited to be launching a new Snip ‘n’ Chip campaign for cat owners in Gisborne and Wairoa.

From 9 April 2025 we are working with local participating veterinary clinics to offer this service to cat owners who need a helping hand with desexing and microchipping. Vouchers help those in need get their cat desexed and microchipped for $30.

Bookings are now OPEN! Click "Book Now" to check if vouchers are available in your area and register for your Snip ‘n’ Chip voucher. If your cat is already desexed, you can use your voucher to have your cat microchipped and registered on the NZCAR database.

Snip ‘n’ Chip availability is dependent on vet clinic capacity, is limited to targeted postcodes and only available until vouchers sell out. If know someone who is not able to access the internet, or needs help with the online system, you can register on their behalf (using their details) or complete the registration alongside them.

Thank you to our participating vet clinics for helping us make this important campaign possible.

Please remember: This campaign is for cats only. A limited number of vouchers are available to help those who require financial assistance. Please, only get a voucher if you need one and intend to use it. In the past, we have noticed some vouchers were never used, or bookings were made with vet clinics and never attended. When this happens, it prevents someone else from using the voucher who might really need it.

For voucher Terms and Conditions please click here.

For more information on desexing, check out our FAQ section or see the resource page on our website.

Snip 'n' Chip is not currently in your area. We aim to run a Snip 'n' Chip campaign in every region of the country at least once a year. Our Snip 'n' Chip campaigns are only available for cats, not dogs or other animals.

We do not offer a wait list for Snip 'n' Chip, but we have compiled some other options that may help you with desexing your animal:

Compare vet clinic prices
The cost for desexing surgery can vary between veterinary clinics and we recommend calling around to compare their prices. There are several vet clinics across the country that provide low cost desexing, as well as payment plans. Each vet clinic will be able discuss their individual processes and requirements, and answer any questions you may have, but generally kittens will need to be at least 1kg or approximately 8-12 weeks old before they can be desexed.

Check in regularly at “Help Someone Desex Their Pet”
Help Someone Desex Their Pet
is a great resource page on Facebook that lists desexing options around the country and is updated regularly.

Look into other services
Other organisations or social services may be able to offer desexing services or provide financial assistance. Most of these can be found online through Google.

Ask family and friends
Members of your family and/or friends may be able to collectively help contribute towards the cost of the desexing surgery.

If needed, please contact your closest SPCA Centre as they may be able to offer local advice or assistance.

For more information on desexing, check out our FAQ section or see the resource page on our website.
